There are times when I don’t want to filter the browser in the game, disrupt the filter, or trace 100+ servers that I don’t care about. When someone shoots me directly IP – Is that for private matches, modded settings, or hanging out the community – I just want to join quickly. That’s where connecting the TF2 server with the incoming IP.
Step 1: Activate the developer console

If you are going to use the Connect Direct command on TF2, you need to open a console.
How do I activate it (2 options)
1-setting option in games:
- Launch TF2
- Click Option → Keyboard Tab → Advanced…
- Inspect Activate the developer console (~)
- Press OK and apply. Finished.
Option 2 – Steam launch option:
- Right -click TF2 in your Steam Library → Property
- Under Launch optiontype:
-console - Close the window. Next time you have a game boot game, active console.
I prefer option 1 because I like to bring up a console only when I need it.
Step 2: Use connect Rule
After the console opens (usually with ~), type:
connect 203.0.113.45:27015
Simply exchange on IP and Actual Server port. The intestine is in the middle? Very important. Without a port, it won’t work.
Sometimes, if it’s a private server, you will get a password prompt after. If not, you enter.
Notes: Some private TF2 servers tend to be turned off for various reasons, so if you cannot connect to one, it might only be an expired server.
Step 3: (Optional) Add to Favorites
If I plan to rejoin later, I use the steam Server browser:
- In Steam: See → Server → Favorite tab
- Click Add the server → Paste IP (with port)
- Refreshing. Then just click twice to connect.
This is very useful – there is no more Retyping IP at any time.
General “Join the TF2 server with IP” Errors that I see (and make)

- Forgot to activate a console
- Type
connectwithout port - Mixing the two and spaces
- Does not refresh your favorite tab before connecting
If it still doesn’t work, I usually re -check the IP or ask whether the server goes down. Nine out of ten, that’s one of them.

Joining the TF2 server via IP is not difficult after you do it once or twice. Whether you jump to a friend’s match or special community server, that is honestly the cleanest way.
As long as you have an IP, port, and console, you are gold.
